Explanation of each message

In message #1, I used the coffin shaped towel message. I felt like this was a good representation of a fear induced message. I think whoever thought of the idea of coffin shaped towels was genius. Many people really believe laying out in the sun is harmless, and that it will never effect them. This message just goes to show that EVERYONE is at risk. Even people that do not have fair skin and burn are at risk as well. I think this message displays all four steps included in the powerpoint. People who do not use sunscreen still exist, and there are plenty of people that believe that sunscreen doesn't work. These same people are ignorant to the fact that by not protecting your skin, you are exposing your skin to harmful rays that can have long-term damage. It is so simply to apply sunscreen, especially now with the easy to use spray lotions. You don't even have to rub it in. Anyone is capable of taking 2 minutes out of their lives and applying sunscreen instead of living with a lifetime worth of skin damage.

In message #2, I used a picture of an extremely burnt person for the peripheral route processing message. I kept this message very simple, and self explanatory. I think most people know that you will turn out this way if you spend hours in the sun without putting any sunscreen on. With this message, people don't need to think about it because the picture is so distracting. The color difference between the sunburn and the protected skin is unreal, and its impossible not to be taken back by it.

In message #3, I used two different images for the two-sided message. In the first one, I used a cartoon of a woman saying the sun was worth the melanoma. Clearly, this is a sarcastic cartoon because most people do not believe it is worth it. However, there are plenty of people who do believe that their image and tan is worth it. There are some who don't even believe they are capable of getting melanoma. In the second image, there is a list of four different types of deadly melanoma. The second image proves that melanoma is extremely serious and can cause huge ugly moles on your body that can eventually become fatal.

Message #3: Two-sided message

Here is a message of a woman who does not take skin cancer seriously. You can tell from her sarcasm that she doesn't truly believe she will get skin cancer. Or if she does believe it, she doesn't take it seriously enough that she will suffer from it.



Here is an image of different types of melanoma. Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer. Many people may believe that melanoma is harmless, when in fact it is deadly. On top of it being deadly, it forms ugly looking moles on your body that can become bigger and change different colors if not watched carefully.




This two-sided message represents how two different people view things. In the first image, you have a cartoon expressing how the tan is worth the potential melanoma. In the second image, their are different types of melanoma. This just goes to show that melanoma is real and everyone is at risk for it.

Message #2: peripheral route processing



This message represents peripheral route processing. It is a pretty self-explanatory message of a person who is very badly sunburn. I know from personal experiences that I have turned that shade of red by not using sunscreen.

Message #1: effective fear-inducing message

Many people are diagnosed with skin cancer due to sun exposure. It take thousands of lives a year. Anyone who spends more than 5 minutes in the sun without proper skin protection puts themselves at risk. If many people started to wear sunscreen in a regular basis, skin cancer would decrease immensely. Anyone is capable of taking 2 minutes out of their day to put on sunscreen. It has become even easier now with built-in sunscreen moisturizers.


The message on the towel reads "Over-exposure to the sun causes skin cancer killing 20 people every day. Protect yourself."

This image displays the protective motivation theory. The message of this image is that people staying out in the sun are laying on coffin-shaped beach towels because they are increasing their chances of skin cancer. The purpose of this message is to show that people who lay out in the sun and don't protect their skin are more prone to getting skin cancer that ultimately ends fatal. At first a lot of people found it shocking, but at the end the message came through.

Final Explanation

For all these previous posts, I chose examples that best explains the message I was trying to convey. For both credible communicators, I chose two ads that I thought would make a major positive influence on people. For the American Cancer Society ad, I knew that it would make a serious impact on some people because Cancer is something that is definitely not taken lightly. It shows that people have been affected by skin cancer and have experienced great loses from it. For my second ad, I chose a Neutrogena sunscreen ad. This ad was made to increase the sales of sunscreen. By having so many features to the sunscreen, it makes it a popular product to have on the market. It is not just for sun protection, but it is specifically made for athletes because its waterproof.

For subliminal Persuasion, I chose a youtube video that shows people who have had great damage done to their skin by the sun. I believe that by showing an actual video of real life people, it becomes more of a reality to people than just some myth people say is true. The video opens your eyes to how the sun really affects a persons skin and the aftermath of it all.

For classical conditioning, I posted a picture displaying intensity. The picture shows a tan, burnt woman with many wrinkles that have been caused by too much exposure to the sun. This picture shows a real life woman who has shown major affects that have caused her skin to have a leathery affect. Studies have shown that skin dries up and becomes leathery after many years in the sun.

For my first credible communication post, I posted pictures of celebrities who practice safe sun. It just goes to show that celebrities like Kristen Bell and Marissa Miller are positive role models that set the way of people practicing safe sun. Just like most people, they use sunscreen and try to stay out of the sun as much as they can. For my second picture, I posted a picture of Cosmo magazine's safe sun campaign. It's huge that corporations like Cosmo magazine attract so many female readers, and get them into practicing safe sun and promoting events that help spread awareness.

More Credible Communicators



This ad was created by the American Cancer Society. It's mission was to express how serious skin cancer is and how it affects so many people and their families.





With this Neutrogena ad, they explain the importance the right sunscreen can do. This sunscreen has many impacts, especially for athletes because its waterproof and stays on for hours. It also has a high SPF number.
